Typhoon
Electronic Insect Trap

Project Scope: Concept

Revisit and redesign a modern version of Jobar Internationals Insect Trap. Improvements I looked to address were a stronger fan, improved methods of attraction and auto settings to save power.

3D Modeling
Assembly Exploration & Concept Refinement

During this phase I studied how existing bug trappers were assembled and began to explore ways on how my design could come together. I refined my rough sketches into a fully assembled 3D CAD model which I shared with our team of engineers to reference for creating a working prototype.

Protyping
Initial Product Review & Evaluation

During this stage I ran tests to validate it's quality in terms of durability and success rate for trapping insects. This fan was placed next to it's predecessor for 3 nights and captured more than double the amount. This prototype was also coated in CO2 emitting paint which we evaluated in a 10' x 10' enclosed room using a particle counter. This confirmed that when placed in a small bedroom there would be enough of a radius to attract insects from any direction.

Testing

The UV light initially shined through the plastic prototype causing the entire sample to glow. I spray painted the top half black in an effort to focus the light through the conical entry point.
